Was skimming through Mashable and this struck me - Introducing: Mashable’s Farmville Channel – where they announced that they’re launching a dedicated channel (similar to categories) for Farmville. The entire post was extremely well written. But seconds later, from the comments I realized, BUM!, it was an April-fool joke.
Okay, good joke. But seriously?!, just a joke. I certainly don’t and can’t think so. Because, it’s too true to be a joke. Quoting them
Millions of you play Farmville — so much so that you’re spending your life savings on virtual crops. Moreover, Zynga, the parent company of Farmville, is said to be worth as much as $3 billion.
We won’t skimp, because Farmville is serious business.
From the comments, it was learned that the ones who got this was a joke, got it from that last line where they called Farmville, a serious business. But it happens to be the very same sentence that made it sound real and convincing to me.
Why?
Because there is nothing weird in something like this getting launched. Farmville sizes more than Twitter as a whole and is the most popular game on Web. They say lifestyle and (pop) culture evolve and they took something like Farmville, something as phenomenal as Star Wars for Americans, as a joke.
Maybe Mashable won’t do it. But if someone does it, it’s going to be NOTHING foolish, but a GIGANTIC hit.
P.S. I haven’t played Farmville yet. But I’m not blind to discard it as ‘just-a-game’ and ‘focus-on-important-things’. Times change. Fun is getting serious.
