This post was typed on the good looking, great performing, well-built and extremely power efficient Acer Aspire 5738G laptop. After an extensive research on the laptop market, I made my decision in its favour and I must say, it proves to be a wise decision indeed.
My requirements just didn’t fall entirely under one category and that’s a big reason why it took a bit long in the research phase! I needed a pretty much powerful processor – Core2Duo to be specific – and enough memory to complement it. I wanted the screen to be at least 15″ in size. And in order to stand eligible for the free Windows7 upgrade program, I needed at least Vista Home Premium to be factory-installed on it. Above all, I was on a limited budget. And there was this one, Aspire 5738G offering all these plus many features more (including a dedicated nVidia 512MB GPU). There wasn’t any reason at all, to keep me away from buying it. I got it for Rs.42,500 (including tax of 4%) which on batteries with power saver mode enabled, lasts for around 5 hours on minimal use and 3.5-4 hours on normal use and 2.5-3 hours with WiFi on; which is pretty great considering it’s performance.
The thing about product reviews
One thing that I learned about the (user-contributed) product reviews and opinions is that, always take them with a pinch of salt. Some people tend to talk about a product or post a review, when it malfunctions or doesn’t work the way they expected it to. Remember that while there is this guy who is disappointed with the particular product, there are hundred others who is satisfied and are happily using the same product.
Read (user-contributed) comments and reviews only to shortlist 3-5 products. Do not base your final decision on them. And it’s advised to read the reviews at CNET, TrustedReviews (UK targeted), PCWorld and such corporate reviewers. In this context, Test Freaks deserves a special mention. It’s a review aggregator. You specify a product and you get to see reviews and comments on it, pulled from all over the web. But what makes it really stand out is that they’ve got expert ratings and reviews too, apart from user reviews.
And one question I’ve been asked much is, how is it possible for a company, to offer something at a much lower price than another company’s product with similar specs. I think it’s the brand value that plays the big part there. For instance, HP has got a higher brand value than Acer and costs more with similar specifications. Also factors like place of assembling influence the price.
And hey, a bonus tip: HP is giving away 25 packages, each package containing a Hp dv6 entertainment notebook, a HP Mini, an awesome backpack and Syncables software to keep the note and net books in sync. This laptop is drawing my attention too.
I read on net it has blue ray disc optional… is it true.. and if it is not present can we connect it to to our laptop thru HDMI port .. and perform all the function .. like reading
I am asking cos there is one more laptop Aspire 5739G with blue ray disk. But it has Ati Radeon graphics card and relatively low processing speed.
A friend of mine came across the ‘optional blu ray’ thing too. I’m not sure about it as Acer has got no online stores. You may want to check with a local reseller.

About connecting it via HDMI.
AFAIK, the HDMI port is an OUT port. You can’t connect a device TO the laptop through it, but can take output.

Initially when i installed n played some games ..my Lappy used to shutdown ….On reportin to Acer Customer Care ..they got my problem solved within 24 hrs …
Now m almost playin all latest games on my Lappy …
This one is a MEAN Gaming Machine which u can get @ 42,000 ….which otherwise wud cost u not less than 1 Lakh …
My all friends are like FLAT ..by Graphics performance ….n Watchin Movies is like we are watchin in Theatre ….Speakers are Awesome !!!

Uhmm, for photo editing the screen wont be perfect.
There is notable color changes relative to the viewing angle, but not as much as older LCDs.
Also, the screen is shiny and thus if there’s some sorta light source, it might get reflected on the screen.
I’d suggest getting this one and getting another monitor.

@ Ratheesh, m not much into display things,bt wat i hv observed till now is,if u keep Acer 5738 G,on any resolution above 1280 by 768 pixels, every on goer who’ll hv a luk @ ur screen wud definetly either pause there for 2 second OR will ask which lappy is this ??? N d feelin those looks n query gives us,makes us feel,like …each n every penny we had spent worth it …

Great Lap great performance got one with Vista Home Premium with my cousin (a n00b so I fix it most times).
Pros: Price, Display, Performance, GPU
Cons: Big CRAPPY KEYBOARD the keys are unconventional.. mounted on something like “T” – shaped mount too difficult to touch type.
If its given a better keyboard I would buy one even if costs 5K more..

I am buying a laptop for study and communication purpose and of course a wee bit of entertainment as well. Have narrowed down to Acer Aspire 5738G. A cousin of mine has offered to pick up one for me from Dubai. I have a few questions for Acer Aspire 5738G owners, and would be much oblidged to recieve answers and their buying and ownership experiences.
1) Is the build quality of the laptop good and sturdy?
2) Is the quaity and resolution of the LED screen good and comparable with the likes of Sony or Dell?
3) Does the laptop get too hot? I read somewhere that Acer laptops have a genetic problem of overheating…
4) What is the best price of this laptop in Chennai, India? It is a value for money laptop at that price?
5) How good is the Acer after sales service and support?
6) Hows the wireless adapter? Efficient?
7) At 2.8 KGS is it too heavy?
8) One good reason WHY I SHOULD NOT BUY this laptop?

1. Yes, build quality is great.
2. It should match the other players.
3. It do get hot, but far less than a compaq I had earlier.
4. Wherever be in India, this is a total value for money deal.
5. Can’t comment on that as I haven’t encountered any issue till now!
6. Wireless Adapter is excellent!
7. And yes, it’s a bit too heavy to carry around.
Only good reason not to buy this would be is, if you’re gonna carry it around in a backpack daily. It’s a bit to heavy for that purpose.

Sound quality is satisfactorily good. The speakers are placed near the foot of the lid and not at the front. It is featured “Dolby Home Theatre” and “VirtualSurroundSound” which is true 🙂
Telling which one among this, Studio15 and dv6t is “good” is impossible. It all comes down to your usage and your personal brand preference. One thing could be assured – all these three will turn out as good decision. Always keep an eye on the weight while going laptop hunting, if you’re gonna carry it around a lot.
For me, it’s more a workstation rather than a portable device.

Thank you for your reply. I am quite convinced with the Acer 5738G but the only hitch is its wait. Currently I am am not working – on a sabatical – doing the students bit (self based study) – increasing my knowledge base – so no reason to move along with the laptop around. But am just wondering what IF I have to move around with the laptop? Carry it on the shoulder from car to carpet? Is it gonna be too heavy a weight to carry? Or should I look at buying the 14 inch / 2.4 kg Acer Aspire 4738? Will it be too small for reading study material on the screen? I did look up both the models at a laptop store but still unable to make a decision.

It seems in your case, weight won’t be a problem as you won’t be doing regular long travel.
Another option is, if you’ve got a separate monitor you may buy the 14 inch version and hook them up.
That way, you’ll have plenty of screen size and at the same time, will be a bit more portable.
Else, I think 5738G is the way to go.

bought 5738g 2 days ago.as per my review this lappy is amazing and hv a gr8 valuve for money.it also has a 1.5k cash back offer.so the total price will come~40k inc vat.had spend around 5days studying abt diff laps in the market and my conclusion ws 5738g.so if u people r looking a decent lap with in 40k budget i would suggest u to go for dis.i dont thk u would get similar spec of 5738g of another brand at this rate.

I am fixed on acer 5738G for myself. I am actually planning to call for it from Dubai where it costs around 2650AED which is about 33500INR which includes win7 home premium, 500GB sata, 4GB DDR3 RAM. The cost difference between india and dubai turns out to be 6500INR. Is it a good idea to call for it from Dubai? Will I still enjoy the same product quality, warranty and after sales service?

@tanveer,thanks.actually i havent started playing games,ws down with fever.so i cant say the lappy gets heated up.the rate @ dubai,33.5k is damm tempting.acer comes with a 1 year international travelers warranty.so service for 1 year won’t be a big deal.
As Sreeraj said, it comes with an International Warranty so buying from Dubai won’t be an issue.
@tanveer gaming in 5738g is supberb.i installed nfs carbon and COD5-world at war,both played well but am not able to play tht in full screen mode.
ANY SUGGESTIONS??? ofcourse the lappy gets heated up but i guess it’s common for gaming laps.

Just wandering, Ive got one and there are volume keys at the top right of the keyboard, when I first got my laptop 11 days ago when i pushed them it used to come up on the screen displaying how high/low i was placeing my volume, Now it doesnt any more ????? Any 1 know how i can fix this ?

Caps Lock??? its as soft and excellent as the other keys. I love the keypad.
About the top right… there are a few acer softwares given by acer, Reinstalling one – dunno which one exactly can solve it. Can you tel me if the signal comes on when you press the wi-fi or bluetooth key??
The volume signal prob can be solved by reinstalling one of the following
Acer epower mgmt
Acer grid vista
Synaptics pointing device.

I’ve recently purchased Acer Aspire 5738G C2D T6600. It’s a very good laptop at given price. I’ve played games like CoDMW,Devil May Cry 4(Dx10), World in Conflict, Farcry 2,Race Drivers Grid. They all ran well with medium settings and resolution 1280×800 (No FSAA) pumping 30fps+. Few games had performance bugs like GTA4 & DiRT (even high end rigs struggle), and as expected 5738G also struggled. But tweaking can help improve performance. It’s a great buy for a portable gaming laptop. Cheers 🙂
