It was WordCamp India 2009 last week, attended my Wordpress creator, Matt Mullenweg and many other popular icons. It was a two day event, started off by a keynote by Matt. Sessions included Wordpress administration, modification, monetisation etc. Another session on “Indian CopyRights and CyberLaw” by Pavan Duggal, an eminent figure in the field was welcomed with much applause. Cyberlaw and Copyrights are two important things which aren’t talked/discussed much in India.

The official logo of the event was designed by Naina Redhu of Aside Design Studio and have been much appreciated. There were liveblogs of the event by Ashish Mohta and Chetan Bhawani. Live videos were streamed by Harry Jerry over qik. The photos of the event are spread all over the web (mostly on twitpic and Flickr) and a search for “wordcamp india” tag will fetch you them. One very interesting fact is that, the hashtag of the event #wci, was the most popular on twitter for 1235 minutes. That’s really long, ~21 hours! It was a clear showcase of what could be done with collective energy ! The organisers have announced that the videos of the event will be soon put up at Wordpress TV.

Matt enthusiastically talked about Buddy Press, a modification (in fact, a collection of plugins) that transforms the wordpress platform (Multi User version) into a powerful, social networking platform. I’ve used it for some time and it’s pretty good. It could be used to build a community around popular blogs/sites, for creating niche-networks, alumni associations and the like. Ning seems to be the competitor for Buddy Press.

I couldn’t attend the event. But, I’ve already decided on attending the next edition for sure. These are the occassions to show Wordpress over love !
